When I look for information about p 90x, there is no shortage of it on the internet. I do find however that most people are looking to sell me something rather than just provide me with honest information about the product. In this article, I will be going over every aspect of the p 90x system. The question we want to answer is this product right for me.
History of P 90x:
In 2002, Tony Horton’s task was to create a fitness program that challenged people that were already in shape. Over the course of the next two years, the exercises are handpicked and several test groups refined the workouts over the 90-day period. In 2004, the program reaches competition and the public sees the program for the first time. P 90X is beachbody’s most successful product that the company has ever released; even today, it is still one of their most popular programs. Through a strong marketing campaign of TV infomercials and word of mouth, the program has grossed nearly $500 million in sales as of 2012.
Tony is known for his p 90x program that resembles a boot camp style home workout program. He has been a fitness guru for the past 20 years. In the early 1980’s he became a personal trainer and soon after started his own his business training clients such as Tom Petty, Billy Idol, and other superstars.
What is p 90x?
P 90x stands for Power 90 Extreme, and is considered by many one of the best home workout programs on the market. P describes the power you will achieve at the end of the workout. 90 stands for the length of time it will take to get there and extreme is description of the workouts.
P90x by definition is an extreme home fitness workout; the programs sole purpose is to help you be in the best shape of your life at the end of the 90 days. The secret behind this program is “Muscle Confusion”, the theory of changing workouts every couple of weeks so that the body does not get use to the workouts. This theory is how they claim to transform your body in just 3 months.
The P90X fitness test:
This is one of the only workout programs that I have seen where they recommend taking a fitness test prior to starting the program. The fitness test will determine if you need to start with a lesser program in order to get you in better shape to use p90x and get the results you are looking for in 90 days.
What is included in the system?
The system comes with an assortment of information to get you started. Everything in the p90x is system is what you will need over the next 90-days, except for actual food and equipment. The system comes with a 90-day money back guarantee, so there is no reason why you would not at least try the program. The program cost is broken up in to three payments of $39.95 plus shipping and handling.
The fitness guide is a book that explains everything about the program. The book goes over every aspect of the program from the workouts to the calendars. The guide also provides tips for getting the most out of the program.
This guide is the heart of the program. If the workout is the car, this diet plan is the engine. It will go over the three different phases of the diet and gives ideas on what to eat. The plan is broken down in to a 3-phase nutrition plan that match’s the workout calendar phases. This plan is vital to finishing p 90x, it will provide you the fuel you will need to get the most out of the workouts.
Three different calendars come with the program. These calendars are your workout schedules for the next 13 weeks. The calendars help you track with your workouts and let you know when it is time to change the workouts to benefit from muscle confusion. Using the calendar to track your progress will ensure you will become one of the p90x success stories.
These sheets come in the form of an excel spreadsheet and are what you will use to track your progress. Part of the workout sheets is the first part of the program, which is the fitness test assessment. These sheets will help you keep track of your overall progress but will also show you how well you are performing each exercise.
The system comes with 12 workouts DVD’s that show you how to perform each exercise. Depending on the calendar you are following will determine with DVD’s you will use over the course of the 12 weeks.
Workout DVD One: Chest & Back – This DVD focuses on traditional chest and back exercises. The exercises are two classic upper-body workouts, push-ups and pull-ups to help build strength. The way the workouts on the DVD are structured help to maximize burning the most calories and developing major upper body muscle groups.
Workout DVD 2: Plyometrics – Be sure you are ready for a challenging workout. This DVD focuses on 30 explosive jumping exercises. Since there is no weights in this workout it is more cardio focused. This workout follows a traditional workout that is also known as jump training.
Workout DVD 3: Shoulders & Arms – There is nothing that gets noticed more than toned arms and shoulders. The third DVD focuses on just that, it will workout your shoulders and arms building muscle mass while at the same time toning out weak areas.
Workout DVD 9: Chest, Shoulders, & Triceps – This DVD’s is designed to make you want to take your shirt off to show your muscles. The DVD focuses on all the popular muscle groups that you want to show off.
Workout DVD 12: Ab Ripper X – Nothing says hey look at me more than a six-pack abs. The entire focus of this DVD is on Abs.
What equipment do I need for p 90x Workouts?
- Yoga mat – This is semi-optional, it really depends on where you are working out. I would recommend some type of mat; even a traditional Yoga mat will be fine.
- Tennis shoes – This will help with high impact workouts like plyometrics. You will want a good pair of running or tennis shoes for your workouts.
- Pull up bar – This is something that is not required at the start but is something that you will need to purchase to get the most out of the program. These are usually in the form of a chin-up bar that mounts to most doorframes. In the beginning, the workouts show you an alternative if you are not able to do any pull-ups.
- Resistance bands – These are a great alternative to using weights. There are great when first starting the workout program and can be used with any workout. They also show you various ways to use them to supplement not having a pull-up bar.
- Dumbbells – While not required to start using the program, I would suggest investing in a good set of adjustable dumbbells to help you get your results.
- Push-up bars – Optional – These help you get the most out of push-ups. Again something, that is nice to have but not required.
Does p90x work?
Tony Horton’s 90-day extreme home fitness program will leave you feeling like you are completely out of shape by the end. Just think in just 90 days you could become completely ripped. So the question that is one everyone’s mind, “Does P90X really work?” I can tell you this, if you buy the program and follow it, you will get in to shape. Depending on your current fitness level that could be 90 days or 12 months, it just depends on you.
What about the results?
Make sure you take a before picture, it will thank me later. It is important to see how you look day one vs day 90. That will be the true measurement of your results. If you look on the internet, you will find countless sources of before and after pictures of people claiming to have use p90x and were ripped. While these are there for the sole purpose of buying the product from them or for them to become your beachbody coach, they are true results for the most part.
As for true p90x results, it will take a lot of hard work but in the end if you can stick with the program you will be better off. It will be a hard journey but once you complete it, you will have a body that will make everyone jealous.
